Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 5, 2026
This policy explains how YenSense, Inc. (YenSense株式会社, "we", "us") handles information in the iOS app "Ocren" (the "App").
Your photos, and the text read from them, never leave your device. All text recognition (OCR) runs on your device. Neither the photos nor the recognized text are sent anywhere, including our servers.
1. Information we collect and why
- Account information: the email address and account identifier from Sign in with Apple or Google. If you choose Apple's "Hide My Email", this is a relay address issued by Apple. We use it to authenticate you, carry your data across devices, and respond to your inquiries.
- Username: a name you set so it can be shown on your posts in Recommend. It is visible to other users.
- Books and memos: the titles, authors, cover image URLs, and reading status of books you save, and the text, page numbers, notes, flags, and dates of your memos. We store them on our servers, linked to your account, so they carry over to a new device.
- Recommend posts: the book title, author, cover image URL, and comment, together with your username. These are visible to other users.
- Rankings: we count the books and memos users save and show the totals to other users as rankings, such as "most read". Only the title, author, cover, and the number of readers or memos are shown. Neither who added a book nor the text of any memo is ever shown. Books saved by only one user are also shown.
- Reports and blocks: posts you report and the reason, and users you block. We use these to handle objectionable content and to hide posts from users you have blocked.
- Book search terms: the title and author you enter, or the ISBN you scan, when adding a book. To find covers and book details, these are sent through our servers to the Google Books API.
- Advertising information: the App shows ads through Google AdMob. AdMob may collect device identifiers and information about ad views and interactions to deliver and measure ads. The App does not request App Tracking Transparency permission and does not use the Advertising Identifier (IDFA). We do not track you across other companies' apps or websites.
2. Photos and recognized text
- Text recognition runs on a model on your device. Neither the photo nor the recognized text is sent anywhere.
- We do not save your photos. When recognition finishes, the photo is released from memory.
- Recognized text becomes part of "Books and memos" above only when you save it as a memo. Recognition results you have not saved stay on your device.
3. Where data is stored, and deletion
- Books and memos are stored in a database on your device and in our database on Supabase. Access to server data is restricted per account so that only you can read and write your data (except for the counting used for rankings above).
- Account deletion: you can delete your account at any time from Settings in the App. This permanently deletes your account information, books, memos, Recommend posts, and report and block records from our servers. This cannot be undone.
- If you used iCloud sync in an earlier version (1.x), version 2.0 reads your backup from iCloud Drive once, the first time it launches. The App never writes to iCloud Drive.
4. Device permissions
- Camera: to photograph book pages and scan ISBN barcodes
- Photos: to read text from images you choose, such as e-book screenshots
- Notifications: for the Quote of the Day reminder (optional; only if you turn it on)
5. Third-party services
The App uses the following services. Their privacy policies also apply.
- Supabase (authentication, storing books and memos, storing Recommend posts, relaying book searches): supabase.com/privacy
- Google Books API (cover and book detail search): policies.google.com/privacy
- Google AdMob (ads): policies.google.com/privacy
- Sign in with Google: policies.google.com/privacy
- Sign in with Apple and App Store purchases: apple.com/legal/privacy
Purchases are processed by Apple. We do not receive your payment information. The App checks your subscription status on your device using App Store information.
6. Earlier versions (1.x)
Versions before 2.0 (1.x) differed from the above as follows. You can check your version on the App Store.
- To recognize text, photos were sent through our servers to Google's Gemini API.
- To get the reading (furigana) of book titles, titles were sent through our servers to Google's Gemini API.
- The app requested App Tracking Transparency permission and, if granted, used the Advertising Identifier (IDFA) for ads.
- With iCloud sync on, books and memos were saved to your own iCloud Drive.
Version 2.0 does none of these.
7. Sharing with third parties
Except as required by law, we do not share your personal information with third parties without your consent. Data is sent to the services in section 5 only as needed to provide the App's features.
8. Children's privacy
The App is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. If we make significant changes, we will notify you in the App or on this page.
